The Rice Fields of Bulan

Mar 20, 2011 | Bali, Plein Aire Study, Sold & Exhibited Work

36″ x 36″

In 1994 I visited the Indonesian island of Bali. I did several large size Plein Air paintings during this time, such as this one, done in the rice fields while local women were harvesting the mature crops. They would not look at me directly, and seemed uncomfortable that I may be painting their portraits. However, by the end of the day, my painting finished and the rice fields cleared, they all posed with me for a group photograph and they admired their own figures seen in the landscape.
