I was obliged to go to Florence in order to study those artists who changed the nature of art. I was drawn there by the painters of the Early Renaissance, whose compositional concepts have dominated representational art ever since. Painting high above the city, one sees Florence laid out and, then Brunelleschi’s dome, a miracle of early modern architecture. When I painted this vista, I understood why this dome, and this city, and her artists, have had such a lasting effect.
