The Stories Still Echo: Red Wall Cavern

Only accessible by boat, Redwall Cavern is a massive amphitheater carved into the Redwall Limestone located on a large bend in the river at mile 33 of the Grand Canyon. This cave dwarfs all who enter and is famous for being visited by John Wesley Powell during his 1869 expedition. Here the transition from rapid-running to the calm awe of Redwall Cavern felt like a sanctuary to me. On both my 1998 and 1999 Colorado river rafting trips I filled many pages in my sketch book while standing in this cathedral of silence. I felt as if the stories of all who had been here could still be heard echoing inside. This painting is the view looking upriver while standing in the shadow and grandeur of geological time.
