January’s Lucence
For this show, Walters is showcasing a captivating view of the Grand Canyon titled January’s Lucence, a 14”x14” oil painting on canvas board, and will be offered during the Live Auction, March 8th. This work will start with a minimum bid of $8000. Walters’ work and the full exhibition will be viewable at the museum until April 13th, 2025.
This painting reflects the essence of the exhibition’s theme, as Curt has (re)imagined a Grand Canyon vista that many, if not most, visitors of the canyon fall in love with. This work allows the viewer to continue exploring the enduring allure of the American West, and the Grand Canyon specifically, through a contemporary lens.
When describing the creation of January’s Lucence, Walters says, “It was cold, and I was bundled up in gloves and a coat. I had been able to paint in what little warmth of the sun was available in the afternoon. Then, a storm and clouds began to build over the North Rim of the canyon as the yawn of evening approached and the sun lowered in the sky. I set the canvas I had worked on all afternoon to the side, and began a new painting to try and capture the brilliance, the lucent color of that last light. I then finished the painting in my Sedona studio. Once complete, I could feel that this canvas retained the emotion and the drama of the moment it was begun.”
