Oil on Canvas Board

When I was a child the giant towers of the Cholla Power Plant rose high from the desert floor, near Joseph City Arizona, next to what became Interstate 40. Defining the west, all through my adult life, coal fired generating stations were the landmarks dotting the landscape.
Time and outdated technology are now retiring several of these mid-century marvels. The Mohave Power Station was dismantled in 2005, the towers of the Navajo Generating Station fell in 2019, and the subject of this image, the Cholla Power Plant, which is due to retire in 2025.
I felt it was important for me to paint this Aide-Mémoire as a way to understand the passage of time.
