Afternoon Shadows- Pipe Springs Overlook

28″ x 22″

I first started doing one-subject series as a study of impressionism. Through this process it has made my studio paintings stronger. This kind of day-long exercise connects me to the place, and allows me to later do a large interpretive studio painting of a particular location.

Therefore, it is not unusual for me to set up my easel and paint in one location several days at a time. This series of paintings was done on location at Pipe Springs, Grand Canyon, in September 2010. These paintings document the quality of light and the motion of the clouds and shadows, from morning to sunset. I will usually combine the mid to late afternoon hours into one large painting, and then more hourly specific interpretations in the smaller works.
